Hello. My name is Mark Jervis and I would like to introduce myself to you, tell you about my experience with firearms, and firearms training and relate my personal philosophy on the armed citizen.
My wife Lisa and I have been married for twenty five years and currently reside in the Mt. Pleasant area of Roanoke County. We have two children, daughter Emily 21 YOA, and son Daniel 19 YOA. I have instructed my wife and children in the proper use and handling of firearms.
Professional Training Bio
I am recently retired from Roanoke County Police Department (January 2014) after serving twenty five years as a local law enforcement officer, retiring at the rank of Sergeant. During my tenure as a law enforcement. I have been around, shot, trained with and taught firearms my entire adult life. I have been a Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (VDCJS) certified firearms instructor since November of 2001, and have trained officers in service pistol and shotgun. I currently hold a NRA pistol instructor certification and have been certified by the NRA and have instructed officers in patrol rifle (AR-15/M-4) type weapon systems. I was heavily involved in the development of firearms training for my department, not only with seasoned officers but also with recruits in our VDCJS accredited police academy. I have 4 years of experience as a SWAT team member and have been trained and worked as a SWAT team sniper and entry team member.
Civilian Training Bio
My firearms experience also includes working part time for a local gun shop in the Roanoke Valley. I was responsible for giving information on and selling firearms to civilians and also conducting one on one trainings with civilian clients in basic firearm safety/operation to include live fire training. I have also been involved with basic firearms safety/operation and live fire instruction with Roanoke County high school age young adults, who are enrolled in a law enforcement curriculum at a local vocational-technical school. In January 2015 my wife Lisa and I opened JervisFirearms101 a small gun shop located in the Garden City area of Roanoke City. Link to Facebook page.
Philosophy on the Armed Citizen
Obviously, I am a proponent of the armed citizen, and not just a person who has a shotgun over the doorway at his home for midnight prowlers. I consider the responsible citizen who carries a concealed weapon on their person in public to be an asset to public safety, as long as that citizen; has had some type of formal firearms training, makes regular trips to the range for practice, educates themselves on the law as it relates to concealed carry. They must be mature in their decision making concerning the use of the firearm for defensive purposes, knowing when they could apply force with their firearm, and when not to, and being able to articulate those reasons to the authorities and be justified in that decision.
IN LIGHT OF RECENT NATIONAL TRAGEDIES IN NEWTOWN, CT., AND AURORA, CO., IT IS MY BELIEF, SUBSTANTIATED BY DOCUMENTED AND NUMEROUS DEFENSIVE PISTOL USES BY CONCEALED CARRY HOLDERS, THAT GUNS SAVE LIVES.
